Emma C. Theis focuses her practice on the defense of employers and insurance carriers in New York State workers’ compensation matters, representing clients before the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board at all stages of litigation. She works closely with claims professionals and risk managers to develop proactive defense strategies, identify early-resolution opportunities, and manage claim exposure effectively.Ms. Theis also has experience defending federal claims arising under the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, as extended by the Defense Base Act, as well as matters brought pursuant to the War Hazards Compensation Act. Her work includes representing clients before administrative tribunals and, where appropriate, in federal courts.Ms. Theis earned her Juris Doctor from New York Law School in 2023, where she served as a Junior Editor of the American Bar Association’s Family Law Quarterly and held executive board positions with the Restorative Justice Association and the Media, Entertainment and Fashion Law Association. She received her Bachelor of Science in Public Relations, with a minor in Philosophy, from St. John’s University’s Honors Program, graduating cum laude in 2020.Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Theis developed a broad litigation and advocacy background across both public-sector and private-practice roles. She worked at Pitta & Baione LLP assisting claimants impacted by the September 11th attacks in securing medical treatment and compensation, and later represented indigent clients at the AIDS Center of Queens County on matters including immigration-related issues and identity theft. She also gained experience handling employment-related matters at Moskowitz & Book LLP on behalf of both employers and employees. Most recently, Ms. Theis served as an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the New York City Law Department, where she was recognized with the Division Chief Award for Outstanding Performance in 2024.In addition to her workers’ compensation and federal defense practice, Ms. Theis is available to handle employer-side employment litigation and commercial litigation, drawing on her experience litigating employment disputes and managing complex cases in a high-volume government litigation environment.Ms. Theis is admitted to practice in New York.
